Romance for Delinquents features mismatched individuals struggling to connect with one another and place themselves in the world. Its stories feature characters such as a juvenile tattoo apprentice who is infatuated with a wild neighbor girl, a lottery commission worker who is obsessed with both theoretical physics and a high school radio station's DJ, and a cable installer who finds petty theft the best cure for an ailing marriage. The collection contains more than stories of obsession, as many of the characters seek not only love but also deliverance. A fertility clinic worker reaches out to strangers to cure her own infertility and loss of hope, a children's composer struggles to overcome the tragedy of his first love, and an amusement park worker takes the final step to reach his soulmate and overcome his fear of heights. The stories contained in this collection explore love in all its forms from young love which is eager to believe, to tenuous love shared between friends; from brotherly love born in isolation, to love as a social ritual presented for tabloids.

A short story writer must compact an entire world into a very limited amount of space. Every line, every word should be well placed and must add up to something. It’s a neat trick, almost like magic. In the best of this collection of stories, Hampton gets it right. He also writes in southern dialect in some of these stories, which is a fine line to walk. Go too far, you end up with corn pone. The first story in the collection, “Rabbit Blood,” nails everything, to include getting a child’s voice right as well. My favorite of these, “The Man Who Fell Through the Sky,” involves a fat man who is buying a Ukrainian bride through an agency (and is probably getting fleeced by that agency), and works at a tourist trap in Ohio. In lesser hands, the reader would be looking down on Henry, sneering at him, dismissing him as white trash, but in this story we are right there alongside him, feeling both the humiliations and the hope.

Romance for Delinquents edition by Michael Wayne Hampton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I'm not always a fan of short stories, but this little collection is a gem. I love the author's voice, style, and the passion that flies off the page for each set of characters.
"Swimmers" is a story that I honestly believe has NEVER been told before, in any form. "A Long Line of Liars" should be read aloud by Garrison Keillor on a Saturday night; it would probably be his best tale of all time. "The Home for Wayward Celebrities" broke my heart and made me smile, but the one I can't get out of my head is "Sea Change." Once again, I really think this may be a NEW story, and it's told so beautifully--I finished this book two weeks ago and I still find myself thinking of this story every few days.

This is a masterpiece--I look forward to seeing more from this author!
In the spirit of full disclosure, I should say that I am not generally a fan of short story collections, or even short stories. I prefer longer works, and can number on one hand the practitioners of the form that I like (Tom Perotta, Ivan Bunin, and a couple other writers). That being said, the best short stories in this collection make my bias moot, since they have the richness of longer novels. Highlights include a story about the confused son of a popular physicist, who has an obsession with a teenaged disc-jockey, and "Sock Monkey" a carnival tale that is surreal and ugly enough to make both Ray Bradbury and William Lindsay Gresham roll over in their graves and take notice. The best of the bunch, however, is "Swimmers" a tragic tale about a fertility clinic, and the desperate souls that work or "donate" there.

I'm still not on board with the "flash fiction" movement, but I should reiterate that is a sign of my bias, not a question of the writer's talent, which he has in abundance.
